Located in south east British Columbia, Fernie is just 326 km southwest of Calgary, and close to the border with Alberta and Montana. Fernie sits in the Elk River Valley surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast. The elevation of the city of Fernie is at 3,310 feet (1,010m) while the top elevation at Fernie Alpine Resort is 6,316 feet (1,925m).
Fernie's popularity is ever growing with the rise in tourism, but our town is much more than a resort – it is a real town, rich in Native legends, and its roots firmly planted in the mining industry.
Fernie was destroyed very early in its history because of fires. After the second fire in 1904, it was agreed that the town should be re-built with brick. Many of those heritage buildings remain today lending a great sense of history and tradition to our main street.
Main Street is home to a wonderful range of stores. Don’t be deceived by the quaint store fronts, you’ll find everything you need here from the most up to date outdoor equipment and gear to our very own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
